Accredited Social Health Activist(ASHA)
Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) is the first port of call for any health related demands of deprived sections of the population, especially women and children, who find it difficult to access health services. She is a trained female health activist in the community who creates awareness on health and its social determinants and mobilizes the community towards local health planning and increased utilization and accountability of the existing health services. ASHA mobilizes the community and facilitates them in accessing health and health related services available at various health institutions.

Criteria For Selection of Accredited Social Health Activist:

  • One ASHA has to be in place for a population of 1000.
  • ASHA must be a woman resident of the village----- “married / widow/ divorced “and preferably in the age group of 25 - 45 years.
  • She should be a literate woman with formal education up to 10th Std.
  • This may be relaxed only if no suitable person with this qualification is available.
  • She should have effective communication skills, leadership qualities and be able to reach out to every section of the community.
  • Adequate representation from disadvantaged population groups should be ensured to serve such groups better.

Incentives to Accredited Social Health Activist:

  • All payments to ASHA should be regular and made on 10th of every month positively.
  • All emoluments to be undertaken through e-transfer.

ASHAs are not paid any fixed monthly remuneration. However, they are paid performance based incentives. For year 2014-15 ASHA will be entitled to get an Assured Incentive of Rs. 1000/ month subject to performance of scheduled activities.
